Singapore’s Daren Tang Reappointed as Head of UN Patent Agency
Singapore’s Daren Tang has been reappointed for a second six-year term as the head of the United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a key agency for managing innovation and patent rights worldwide. The decision came during the agency’s general assembly, where Tang was the sole nominee.
WIPO’s Role in Innovation
Founded in 1967 and based in Geneva, WIPO plays a crucial role in assisting creators and entrepreneurs to safeguard their intellectual property (IP) on a global scale. This reappointment signifies the trust member states have placed in Tang to further develop the agency’s mission.
Tang expressed his vision in a statement, highlighting the transformation of intellectual property from merely a legal issue to an essential business and economic asset. “In my first term, I worked with member states to transform IP into a catalyst for innovation and creativity, as well as a driver for job creation, investments, growth, and development,” he noted.
Future Goals for WIPO
As Tang prepares to embark on his second term starting October 1, he emphasized the need for WIPO’s systems to remain efficient and effective. He aims to ensure that global IP standards are consistently updated to cater to the evolving needs of creators and innovators, particularly in a world increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.
“We must continue to protect and utilize IP for millions around the globe, leveraging it to tackle significant global challenges,” he added. “It is essential that intellectual property moves from the periphery to the center of our economic dialogue.”
Recent Trends in International Patents
In related news, WIPO reported an uptick in international patent applications, with a 0.7 percent increase in 2025, totaling 275,900 filings globally. China remains the leader in patent filings, contributing 73,718 applications, followed by the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
