Netherlands Transfers Billions in Gold to London as Part of 'Crisis Preparedness' Strategy

Dutch Central Bank Moves Billions in Gold to London Amid Geopolitical Unrest

The Dutch central bank, known as DNB, has taken significant steps to enhance its financial resilience by relocating billions of dollars worth of gold from North America to London, driven by rising geopolitical tensions. This strategic move, involving 86 tonnes of gold over several months, was officially announced on Wednesday and aims to ensure that the precious metal can be traded more effectively during emergencies.

The Gold Transfer Process

DNB revealed that the transfer process, conducted between March and August, involved a sophisticated operation where 27 tonnes of gold bars were transported from both New York and Ottawa to Zeist in the Netherlands. Subsequently, a similar volume of gold was sent to London without the need to melt down the bars, thus preserving their integrity.

Shifting Economic Landscapes

The decision to relocate the gold aligns with ongoing trade tensions between the US and Canada, where fresh tariffs have been imposed following unsuccessful negotiations. The DNB’s president, Olaf Sleijpen, stated that this relocation was essential for bolstering the bank’s preparedness for potential crises.

Transporting Gold: A Complex Challenge

While the intricate logistics of shipping such a massive quantity of gold across the Atlantic remain undisclosed, the DNB explained that a portion of the transfer was executed by selling the gold in New York and reacquiring it in London. This dual strategy of buying and selling, combined with physical transport, enabled the bank to mitigate risks associated with this complicated gold relocation.

Understanding Geopolitical Pressures

Though DNB did not specify the factors behind the “geopolitical unrest” it mentioned, it’s clear that the US economy faces uncertainties, particularly due to its ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which have repercussions on global trade. Canada, on the other hand, has struggled under the weight of US tariffs affecting vital industries such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

Strategic Advantages of London Holding

DNB stated that gold kept with the Bank of England is considered “the world’s most easily tradable gold,” making it more accessible in a crisis compared to stocks held in the US or Canada. Before the transfer, the DNB had 31.3% of its gold stored in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa; post-transfer, these figures have decreased to 18.5% in each location. As of the end of 2025, the total Dutch gold reserve was 612.4 tonnes, valued at approximately €72.2 billion.

With this move, the bank’s gold holdings in London have surged from 18.1% to 32.1%, while the percentage of reserves retained in the Netherlands stands at 30.8%.

Conclusion

The Dutch central bank’s recent gold relocation underscores a proactive approach in navigating the complexities of global economics. By positioning itself strategically in London, DNB aims to enhance liquidity and stability for its assets amidst uncertain geopolitical climates.
