In Kyiv, a phrase often echoed is, “This feels pre-war.” This saying encapsulates a longing for the simplicity of life before the turmoil. It suggests a sense of normalcy—like the ability to stroll at night, travel freely, or plan life well into the future. Unfortunately, these simple joys have become rare commodities.

The Duality of Daily Life

People sometimes use this phrase when they experience fleeting moments that distract them from the ongoing conflict, such as enjoying a play or discussing the latest Eurovision entries. However, this capacity to mentally escape does not erase the constant reminder of our current reality. In this city, a theatrical performance can be tainted by the fear of airstrikes. Musicians who once might have participated in Eurovision now find themselves serving in the military. Just recently, a drone crashed into a beloved café, where locals typically gathered for their morning brews. Yet, this café reopened, and patrons flocked to its new location, ready to enjoy a cappuccino while also scanning QR codes displayed around, contributing to military support efforts.

Recent Experiences in Poland

My recent trip to Poland offered an insightful contrast. The coastal town of Sopot, near Gdańsk, presented a tranquil atmosphere, a stark contrast to the memories of 1939 when Hitler’s army occupied this area. The hotel along the shoreline served as his base during the invasion, as he had a fondness for this region. Ironically, in 2009, Putin stayed at the same hotel to commemorate the 70th anniversary of World War II. This juxtaposition of historical weight against a backdrop of carefree tourists made me ponder how places carry a multitude of narratives woven through time.

Returning to Kyiv

Upon my return to Kyiv, while sitting by the banks of the Dnipro River, I reflected on the emotions stirred during my time in Sopot. It dawned on me that every location holds as many stories as there are witnesses to its past, and these stories can coexist within the same space.
