Co-Pilot’s Attack on Flydubai Flight Raises Security Concerns
An alarming incident occurred on a Flydubai flight headed to Israel, where the co-pilot allegedly attacked the pilot with a crash axe, as reported by the United Arab Emirates’ prosecutor general. The flight, which carried over 170 passengers, faced a perilous dive of 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) two and a half hours after takeoff, only to be subdued by fellow passengers who managed to regain control of the aircraft.
Flight Crisis: A Desperate Situation
Captain Smit Machchhar, who was injured during the attack, described the grave moment when he realized the plane was in distress. “I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside,” he recounted, allowing passengers to enter the cockpit to assist. Thankfully, two reserve pilots safely landed the aircraft in Saudi Arabia.
The Mystery of the Crash Axe
Traditionally kept in the cockpit for emergency situations, the crash axe used in the attack has become a focal point for investigators, especially given the strict security measures on this particular route. While initial reports suggested that the weapon might have been a knife, the details surrounding the attack are still being examined by authorities.
The UAE’s attorney general confirmed that inquiries are ongoing to identify the full circumstances and motivations behind this alarming incident.
Identifying the Attacker
According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the co-pilot responsible for the attack is an Omani national, reportedly named Hamam al-Hammami. However, this identification has yet to be officially confirmed. Previous reports indicate that during his employment with Oman Air, he was removed from flight training over concerns regarding his radical beliefs and reassigned to another role within the airline.
In 2023, al-Hammami graduated with a degree in aviation management from Buckinghamshire New University in the UK but did not complete any pilot training there.
Suicidal Intentions and Radical Influence
Citing accounts from passengers, Netanyahu mentioned that after being subdued, the attacker was heard shouting, “Kill me, kill me!” This indicates possible suicidal intentions, with Netanyahu asserting that it seemed likely the co-pilot planned to down the plane. He further disclosed that the co-pilot had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination.
Continuing Investigations
The UAE attorney general, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, categorized the attack as a “terrorist act,” reaffirming that investigations are underway to explore the circumstances, motives, and any potential connections related to the attack.
Meanwhile, Captain Machchhar, who sustained injuries during the incident, was initially treated in a local hospital but has since been airlifted to Abu Dhabi, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The Indian embassy in the UAE confirmed that the pilot is recovering well, with Machchhar expressing optimism about his health: “I am confident that the recovery will be there and I will become fit and healthy again.”
