Women in Afghanistan are permitted to re-enter competitive sports.

Afghan Women United: A New Era for Women’s Soccer

The recent decision by FIFA to officially recognize Afghan players marks a significant milestone for women’s soccer in Afghanistan. This development allows players to represent their country in official matches, bringing a sense of hope and opportunity, especially for women in the diaspora. Amid challenges, Afghan Women United is poised to become a beacon of inspiration and talent development.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Former Afghan women’s team captain, Khalida Popal, expressed optimism regarding this newfound recognition. “Our team has always been known as an activist team,” she stated. Popal emphasized that, with proper support from FIFA, the opportunity has arrived for these players to showcase their skills and cultivate youth talent scattered across the globe.

While the recognition paves the way for growth within the team, challenges persist. Popal acknowledged the difficulties faced by Afghan women still residing in Afghanistan, stating, “I know it’s going to be tough because Afghan women inside Afghanistan will struggle to be part of that.” Despite this, she remains committed to ensuring their voices are amplified, conveying hope and solidarity.

A Path Forward with FIFA’s Support

FIFA’s endorsement stems from the establishment of Afghan Women United, a refugee team that is set to embark on a one-year pilot project beginning in May 2025. This development follows years of advocacy on behalf of displaced players yearning for the chance to compete. Notably, while Afghanistan will not qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, they have the potential to compete in the qualification rounds for the 2028 Olympics.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reflected on this initiative, stating, “We are proud of the beautiful journey initiated by Afghan Women United… to enable them, and other FIFA member associations that may not be able to register a national or representative team, to take the next step.” This initiative represents a commitment to inclusivity and development within women’s soccer on a global scale.

Building a Community of Afghan Female Footballers

Currently, over 80 Afghan female footballers can be found in various countries, including Australia, Europe, the USA, and the Middle East. Many of these players were contracted prior to the Taliban’s takeover, demonstrating the resilience of Afghan female athletes. To foster connection and skill enhancement, FIFA is organizing regional selection camps in England and Australia, culminating in a training camp in New Zealand this June.

The Afghan United Women team had a promising debut in 2025 during the FIFA United Women’s Series, achieving their first victory against Libya in November, showcasing their determination and talent.

A Bright Future Ahead

With this newfound recognition and support, Afghan Women United stands on the cusp of a transformative journey. As they navigate the world of official competition, their resolve to uplift and empower Afghan women both at home and abroad remains steadfast. The future looks bright for these athletes as they chase their dreams and inspire others to do the same.
