AWARE Ushers in New Leadership as Corinna Lim Steps Down

On January 1, 2026, the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE), a prominent women’s rights organization, welcomed a new executive director. After 16 years of dedicated leadership, Corinna Lim, 61, has stepped down, passing the torch to Lim Shoon Yin, 50, an expert in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Corinna Lim will continue to play a crucial role in the organization for the next six months, serving in an advisory capacity to ensure a smooth transition.

AWARE: A Legacy of Advocacy and Research

Founded in 1985, AWARE is dedicated to researching and advocating for women’s issues in Singapore. The organization addresses critical matters such as workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, the challenges faced by older women living in poverty, and the nation’s adherence to United Nations gender equality standards.

Corinna Lim’s Journey and Impact

Corinna Lim began her journey with AWARE as a volunteer in 1992, offering pro bono legal counseling to women facing workplace harassment and domestic violence. A trained lawyer with a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University, she was deeply moved by the struggles of underprivileged women who could not afford legal assistance.

She eventually transitioned from a corporate law career to focus entirely on women’s rights, taking on the role of AWARE’s honorary secretary in 2006 and becoming the organization’s inaugural executive director in 2010.

Under Lim’s leadership, AWARE’s team grew to over 30 full-time staff members, significantly expanding its research, advocacy, and support services. Key initiatives included the establishment of the Sexual Assault Care Centre at Dover Crescent and the launch of Catalyse, AWARE’s corporate training program aimed at promoting workplace gender equality.

Achievements and Future Direction

Throughout her tenure, Corinna Lim has been instrumental in advocating for critical policy changes and legislative reforms related to workplace protections, paternity leave, access to housing for single mothers, and legal protections for survivors of sexual assault. In reflecting on her time at AWARE, she stated, “AWARE has never been about one person – it has always been about people who refuse to accept that inequality is normal. I have been privileged to serve alongside colleagues, partners, and supporters who are willing to stay with difficult questions and work for change over time. It feels like the right moment to pass the baton.”

As Lim Shoon Yin takes over, the organization is set to continue its mission, building on the firm foundation laid by Lim’s leadership.
