Trump Calls for ‘Energy Ceasefire’ Between Ukraine and Russia
In a surprising announcement, US President Donald Trump declared an ‘energy ceasefire’ between Ukraine and Russia, aimed at de-escalating tensions that have affected global energy prices due to escalated attacks on energy infrastructure.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed,” Trump stated on social media. He emphasized the importance of respecting the ceasefire, thanking followers for their attention.
Ukrainian Response to Ceasefire Call
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been advocating for a comprehensive ceasefire and proposed organizing elections should Russian President Vladimir Putin agree to a 60-day truce amidst increasing Russian offensives.
“Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, and we will organize elections,” Zelenskyy remarked during an interview, in light of recent criticisms directed at him by Trump.
Comments on Ukraine’s Military Strategy
Trump’s remarks included criticism of Zelenskyy for targeting Russian oil refineries. This comment followed the temporary lifting of US sanctions on Russian fuel, which were originally intended to weaken Moscow’s military capabilities in Ukraine.
“He better damn well stop,” Trump advised when questioned about Ukraine’s military actions. He further suggested that it might be time for Ukraine to consider a new leadership.
In a counter-statement, Zelenskyy asserted that Trump’s announcement regarding the diesel deal had only encouraged Moscow’s aggressive actions. He stressed the need for Washington to push for meaningful discussions to resolve the enduring conflict.
“Today, Russia expressed thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel by bombarding residential areas in Zaporizhzhia,” Zelenskyy pointed out, highlighting the consequences of relaxed sanctions. “The recent events confirm that Russia interprets any easing of pressure as a green light to continue its assaults.”
The Impact of Ongoing Attacks
Zaporizhzhia, a city in southern Ukraine, has frequently been subjected to Russian bombardment, with recent attacks escalating dramatically. Tragically, a six-year-old girl was killed in one of these assaults when part of an apartment complex was destroyed. Her grandfather was seen mourning deeply over her loss as rescue teams worked to recover victims.
In a direct reply to Trump’s suggestions about leadership, Zelenskyy firmly stated that it should be left to the Ukrainian people to determine their leadership, implicitly acknowledging that Putin has his own preferences for Ukraine’s leadership.
Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy also indicated Ukraine’s willingness to cease its strikes on Russian oil refineries if Russia were to halt its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.
