On August 4, security forces discovered a drone equipped with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport, located in eastern Germany and close to a fleet of Ukrainian cargo planes. Fortunately, the drone did not detonate due to a faulty detonator. However, authorities suspect that a second drone may have collided with a nearby cargo aircraft.

While speculation exists that Russia could be behind these actions, the German government has refrained from making direct accusations, and Moscow has denied any involvement.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is significant both for the German military and NATO allies, serving as a crucial logistics hub for the transport of military supplies. During a recent coalition retreat at Neuhardenberg, Chancellor Merz acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “We face challenges, some of which originate from outside our borders, which we cannot ignore.” He noted the increasing ruthlessness of attackers, who seem willing to cause significant property damage and even endanger lives.

Moreover, reports indicate that a third drone has been located near Leipzig Airport, and authorities have detected traces of the military explosive hexogen in the vicinity.
