Zelenskyy: US Security Pact for Ukraine War Is 'Fully Prepared' for Signing

A Major Security Agreement for Ukraine Approaches Finalization

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a comprehensive security agreement with the United States is “100% ready” to be signed, following two days of discussions involving representatives from Ukraine, the US, and Russia. This indicates notable progress in ongoing negotiations. Further talks are planned for the upcoming weekend. During a press briefing in Vilnius on Sunday, Zelenskyy expressed that Ukraine is awaiting its allies to confirm when and where the signing of the security guarantees document will take place, which will then require ratification from both the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament.

“For us, security guarantees primarily mean assurances from the United States. The document is fully prepared, and we are simply waiting for our partners to finalize the date and location for the signing,” stated Zelenskyy.

Urgent Call for Enhanced Air Defense Support

On the same day, Ukraine made a plea for increased air defense assistance from its allies as Kyiv was grappling with extreme weather conditions, enduring a second consecutive day with many buildings lacking heating due to recent Russian strikes. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported that over 1,300 apartment buildings in Kyiv were still without heating, compounded by sub-zero temperatures and continuous airstrikes that had hindered repair efforts to restore heating and electricity.

Pushing for EU Membership

Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s ambition for European Union membership by 2027, describing it as a vital “economic security guarantee.” He highlighted the discussions held in Abu Dhabi as a significant trilateral meeting that included not only diplomats but also military representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the US—all of which marked a shift in the longstanding dialogue. Acknowledging the substantial differences between Ukraine and Russia, Zelenskyy underscored that territorial issues remain a primary obstacle in the negotiations.

Calls for Unity Against Threats

During an event in Vilnius commemorating the 1863 uprising against Tsarist Russia, Polish President Karol Nawrocki urged a unified front among nations facing the threat of “imperial Russia.” Zelenskyy also participated in this event. Nawrocki emphasized that understanding historical common ground among nations makes it easier to confront current challenges, particularly amid the resurgence of imperial ambitions from Russia.

“Whether it’s Tsarist, Bolshevik, or Putin’s Russia, our countries—Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine—are facing the same problem posed by the Russian Federation,” Nawrocki stated. In a similar tone, Zelenskyy reminded Europe to value its independence and remain vigilant, citing that “It is premature for Europe to ease up while the war machine of Russia is still operational, and as other dictators around Europe maintain their grip.” He added, “They all view Europe—and us—as potential targets.”

New Energy Initiatives in Europe

In an effort to enhance regional energy security, European nations have pledged their commitment to the Hamburg Declaration, aimed at establishing a robust clean energy framework. A new agreement will be signed during a summit in Hamburg, which is expected to boost offshore wind energy projects in the North Sea. This initiative aims to provide energy to various nations and follows a previous commitment made three years ago to achieve 300GW of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea by 2050, a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its strategic influence over European energy resources.

Conclusion
