After enduring weeks at sea in a cramped fishing boat filled with other refugees from Myanmar, Rashid’s arrival marks a decade of hardship for him and his community. Today, this stateless boy, now 14, has observed a continuous stream of boats arriving on the island, highlighting the desperate attempts of his people to escape violence and oppression.

The Harsh Reality Behind Their Escape

“We didn’t choose Malaysia because we thought it was a great country,” Rashid shared, preferring to use only his first name out of fear of deportation. “The only reason was that my father was already there, and my mother decided to follow him so we could survive.”

This sentiment resonates deeply within the Rohingya community. Their exodus is driven not by choice, but by necessity, as they flee from the horrors inflicted by military and ethnic Buddhist factions that have decimated their villages.

Tragic Losses at Sea

The dangers associated with such perilous journeys can be devastating. In a sobering reminder of the risks they face, at least 28 Rohingya individuals—comprising nine women and five children—tragically lost their lives when their boat capsized near Langkawi in November. This incident underscores the harrowing experiences endured by one of the most persecuted groups in the world.
