Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Seven Asian Elephants in India

In a heartbreaking incident in northeastern India, seven wild Asian elephants, including several calves, lost their lives after a speeding train struck a herd crossing the tracks. This unfortunate event unfolded early Saturday morning in the Hojai district of Assam state, highlighting the ongoing challenges of coexistence between wildlife and infrastructure.

According to local officials, the collision occurred as the Northeast Frontier Railway’s train driver spotted a large group of elephants on the tracks. Despite immediately engaging the emergency brakes, the train couldn’t avoid hitting some members of the herd. Tragically, along with the fatalities, another calf was reported injured in the aftermath of the incident.

Following the collision, five train carriages derailed; however, it was fortunate that no injuries were reported among passengers or crew aboard the Delhi-bound express. In the wake of the event, train services in the region faced cancellations and diversions throughout the day.

Aftermath and Context

Veterinarians examined the deceased elephants, and they were subsequently laid to rest. Assam boasts one of India’s largest elephant populations, with estimates indicating nearly 6,000 elephants residing within the state. Local railway tracks frequently intersect with the natural paths of elephant herds. However, the site of this tragic collision is noted as an area outside of recognized elephant corridors, according to the Northeast Frontier Railway.
