Janice Choi, a 42-year-old resident, expressed her outrage after HSBC informed her that she had failed to report the theft promptly, leading to her responsibility for the charges. In a striking contrast, a friend of Choi, who had her credit card stolen on the same day, managed to have the fraudulent transactions reversed by reporting the loss the next day.

Failed Appeals and Frustrations

Following multiple communications with the bank, Choi was informed in February that her appeal had been denied. During a conversation on March 6, a bank representative offered her a plan to repay the debt in interest-free installments, which Choi found to be both insulting and ridiculous.

“I truly felt they were being insulting and ridiculous. I told them I couldn’t believe they would actually offer that kind of service to me,” she shared.

Choi’s ordeal began on November 15 during a crowded sports tournament at Happy Valley Recreation Ground, where her identity card and credit card were stolen while she was preoccupied with her children. It wasn’t until the next day that she discovered the theft, by which time three unauthorized transactions totaling HK$126,580 had already taken place.
