HSA Calls for Blood Donors as Year-End Collection Volumes Decline

Urgent Call for Blood Donations in Singapore Amid Seasonal Decline

SINGAPORE: The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued a pressing appeal for blood donations as the country experiences a seasonal dip in blood collection. According to the authority, the year-end period typically witnesses a reduction of up to 20 percent in blood donations.

Last year, Singapore faced a significant challenge when the supply of Group O blood reached critically low levels, with reserves falling to less than six days’ worth. The HSA emphasized the importance of maintaining a minimum nine-day blood stockpile to ensure the nation is prepared for emergencies.

Potential Consequences of Travel on Blood Supply

Travel to certain regions may also contribute to low blood supplies. The HSA noted that donors returning from areas with insect-borne diseases might be ineligible to donate for up to four months, which could further impact the availability of blood in the coming months. Therefore, it is crucial for eligible individuals to step forward and donate during this critical time.

Warning from the Health Minister

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has expressed concern over the potential for diminished stocks of specific blood types as the year comes to a close. He highlighted the common oversight regarding travel ineligibility periods in a recent social media post. “I, too, am guilty of this. After attending the G20 meetings in South Africa in November, I won’t be able to donate blood until March of next year,” he said.

The HSA’s call for donors serves as a reminder of the critical role individuals play in maintaining blood supplies, especially during the holiday season when donations tend to decline.

  • The HSA has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations due to seasonal drops in supply.
  • Last year, Singapore’s blood stocks fell to critically low levels, prompting the need for at least a nine-day supply.
  • Travel restrictions after visiting high-risk areas may exacerbate the shortage of blood availability.
