Gabon National Team Faces Suspension After AFCON Exit
The Gabon national football team has been suspended following their disappointing performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they were eliminated in the group stage. This decision, announced by the acting Sports Minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula, also includes the dismissal of the coaching staff and the exclusion of key players, notably star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Government’s Decision
On Wednesday, Mamboula delivered the news via a televised address, stating, “Given the Panthers’ disgraceful performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, the government has decided to dissolve the coaching staff, suspend the national team until further notice, and exclude players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.” This announcement came on the heels of a 3-2 defeat to the Ivory Coast in Marrakesh.
Performance Review
Coached by former player Thierry Mouyouma, Gabon struggled significantly throughout the tournament. They had already received their marching orders after losing their first two matches in Group F against Cameroon and Mozambique. In their final match, despite leading 2-0 against the defending champions Ivory Coast, they allowed three goals to slip away, finishing last in their group.
Player Reactions
Neither Aubameyang nor Ecuele Manga participated in the match against the Ivory Coast, with the former returning to his club, Olympique de Marseille, for treatment on a thigh injury. The seasoned striker took to social media, expressing, “I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am.” At 36 years old, it is probable that he has played his last match for Gabon, a sentiment echoed for the 37-year-old defender Ecuele Manga.
Historical Context
The disbanding of national teams in response to disappointing tournament performances is not new in Africa. However, such actions have become less common since FIFA implemented strict regulations against government involvement in football associations.
