Singapore Sailing Federation to Relocate Amid Upcoming Long Island Development

Choosing the Right Location for the Future of Sailing

The decision regarding the new headquarters site for the sailing federation is vital for the sport’s ongoing success. President Stanley Chan emphasized that finding the right location for the National Sailing Centre will dramatically influence both the visibility and accessibility of sailing. In his words, “If it’s a place that is not accessible, the sport might just die off.” This highlights the importance of ensuring that sailing remains a viable recreational option for enthusiasts.

Chan noted that the federation is collaborating with various governmental organizations to identify the best possible site for the new facility.

Why the East Coast is Ideal for Sailing

The federation’s task extends beyond just relocating facilities; it’s focused on making the sport accessible, sustainable, and competitive in the long term.

Since its establishment in 1999 along East Coast Park, the National Sailing Centre has provided sailors with expansive areas and pristine, safe coastal waters, essential for a thriving sailing community.

Many sea sports aficionados believe that the east coast of Singapore is the prime location for activities such as sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Sailing club director Ho Kah Soon pointed to several key factors that make this area particularly suited for these activities: its accessibility, favorable wind patterns, and the absence of heavy shipping routes.

“Facing the open Singapore Strait and the South China Sea, the east coast enjoys a clear wind path,” stated Mr. Ho of the Constant Wind Sea Sports Centre. “The coastline from Changi to Marina Bay is relatively unobstructed, allowing the wind to flow smoothly over the water with minimal turbulence, which is often a problem near dense urban areas.”

He further explained that unlike the northern waters, which are sheltered by Johor, or the industrially impacted western regions, the eastern seaboard benefits from cleaner, more consistent air currents, making it an excellent choice for sailing enthusiasts.

  • The federation’s president stresses the importance of an accessible location for the new sailing headquarters.
  • Collaboration with government agencies is underway to identify the ideal site.
  • East Coast Park has been a vital space for sailing since 1999, offering safe and clean waters.
  • Factors like accessibility and wind conditions make the east coast the preferred site for sailing activities.
