Dance Community Navigates New Rules at Marina Bay Sands

Recent changes at Marina Bay Sands have stirred discussions within the dance community, especially among performers and videographers. After an incident where a fan filming a dance performance was asked to leave by security, the news quickly circulated, raising concerns about the new filming policies.

Community Reactions to Filming Restrictions

Ms. Ng, a dancer in the Z-Axis crew, expressed her dismay about the new regulations, stating she felt “a bit disheartened.” She shared, “Even the online comments reflect a desire to return to our previous filming location. The audience seemed to really enjoy what we were doing there.”

Similarly, Renee Han, a 25-year-old instructor with Z-Axis, voiced her disappointment but also recognized Marina Bay Sands’ right to enforce these guidelines. “They own the space, so they’re entitled to set the rules,” she noted.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Many dancers, like Han, have a long history of performing in public domains, often facing interruptions from security. “We’re accustomed to being ‘chased out,'” she remarked. However, they appreciate the opportunities they’ve had. “For me, dancing with my friends is what I cherish most. If we draw a crowd, that’s an added bonus.”

Previously, the fountain area played host to four to five dance crews at one time. Dancers recognize that the new restrictions serve partly as a response to crowd control in this bustling locale. Ms. Chong Yuki, 24, from Roxo Crew, noted the complications that arose due to the fountain’s popularity. She explained, “When we set up our lighting, it can block the path for tourists wanting to enjoy the fountain and its light show.” She added, “When there are too many groups, I feel a bit paiseh,” using the local term for embarrassment.

While the changes have affected the performance landscape, many dancers remain hopeful for a resolution that lets them continue sharing their passion in a way that respects both their needs and those of the venue’s visitors. The vibrant dance culture at Marina Bay Sands may undergo adjustments, but the community’s spirit remains resilient.
